Castle Fight: how the Warcraft 3 map plays, and where to play it in 2026

What is Castle Fight?

Castle Fight is one of the classic Warcraft III custom maps. W3Champions describes it as a custom game that “has been played for over 15 years” and calls it one of the core games behind what we now call auto-battlers.

The idea is very simple:

• Every player has a builder and picks a race.
• You build buildings in your area. Most buildings spawn units on a timer; some give buffs or debuffs.
• Units walk to the other side by themselves and fight whatever they meet. You do not control them.
• Gold comes in at fixed intervals. You decide what to build, where and when.
• Destroy the enemy castle to win.

Because you never move a single soldier, the game is about economy, timing and counters. You look at what the enemy builds and you answer with the right unit types. Warcraft III has attack types and armor types, so archers, casters and siege each are strong against different targets. Castle Fight uses this system, and reading it well is most of skill.

Each player also has a one-time Rescue Strike that clears enemy units on your side of the map. Using it at the right moment can save a game.

Who made Castle Fight?

Castle Fight is not one map. It is a family of versions made by different people over many years:

• Gex (gekko) made the original Castle Fight. Later he also made Castle Fight Supremacy, an alternative version with visual polish and balance changes.
• When Gex stopped working on it, Elf_Stratigo recreated the map with the same concept and most of the same races. He then passed the source to dd_mn and Sunus. In 2013 dd_mn wrote on Hive Workshop that he rebuilt the computer player because he liked to play with AI against human opponents.
• Frotty is listed as author of Castle Fight: Definitive Edition, which aims to be “the most stable, balanced and complete” version, with new races, new balance and better AI. W3Champions says it took two and a half years to make. It has a ranked 3v3 ladder there.

There are more forks too, for example Castle Fight SL, ES, Ultimate and X. If you see many versions in a lobby list, this is why.

Where to play Castle Fight in 2026

All options below need Warcraft III. Castle Fight is a custom map, not a separate game.

1. W3Champions (ranked)

W3Champions is a community-run ladder and matchmaking service for Warcraft III. Castle Fight: Definitive Edition has its own ranked 3v3 mode there. The Definitive Edition site says the queue is busiest from 18:00 to 22:00 Central European Time. Season 25 started in June 2026.

2. Warcraft III custom games

You can join or host Castle Fight from the custom game list in Warcraft III. Since June 2026 the Definitive Edition also has an official Battle.net version; it is the same map as on W3Champions. The Definitive Edition team warns that an unofficial copy of their map, the “perks version”, is going around on Battle.net. 3. Download the map

Hive Workshop and wc3maps.com keep many versions of the map. Put the file in your Warcraft III maps folder and host a game with friends or with computer players. If you play alone, pick a version that has AI.

Why people still play it

Most strategy games ask for fast hands. Castle Fight asks for good decisions. You need to know when to spend and when to save, which lane to push, and which counter the enemy army needs. A match is short and the battle is fun to watch, even when you lose.
